East Grinstead Town FC are delighted and proud to host the eigthth annual memorial match to Adam Dabell who collapsed and died while playing football.
Adam, a former Sackville pupil, died on 10th March 2004 at the age of 26 while playing a match with friends at Edenbridge leisure centre. He had just scored a goal in the five-a-side competition when he began to feel unwell. He was rushed by ambulance to the Kent and Sussex hospital in Tunbridge Wells, where it was confirmed he had died. A coroner concluded a valve in his heart had failed.
At that time we, his extended family with his many good friends, decided that the best memorial, to a young man so full of life, would be a living memorial.
Contributions were made that provided for a Memorial Cup and Trophy in Adam’s name.
These are presented to the winning team from an annual football match between the two sixth form colleges in East Grinstead;
Sackville, which Adam attended, and Imberhorne which many of his friends attended.
There were also sufficient funds left to enable the purchase of team strips for each of the participating teams.
Both teams receive commemerative medals each year and the event is increasingly heavily supported by the young people of the Town.
Adam's father John said: "This is to say a personal thank you to those who contributed to this living memorial, who continue to make it happen each year and to let you know that the 8th annual match will take place on Thursday 6th October at the East Grinstead Town F.C. ground.
Those of you that can make it, I would like to warmly invite you to join us there to cheer on the two young teams, as we remember Adam.
Please pass this invitation on.
For more information, please refer to Adam's website:- http://adamdabell.net/ and that of EGTFC to whom we continue to be hugely grateful for their support of this match.
This year, we shall be looking to promote and seek voluntary contributions to CRY - Cardiac Risk in the Young - CRY was founded in 1995 to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD); Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS, SADS), in the young. I would encourage you to visit their website:- www.c-r-y.org.uk"
