Following three close defeats and a draw, albeit against the top sides, Wasps Under 18s claimed their first league win with a 1-0 victory at Horley.
The first 15 minutes saw the U18s settle into the game, with Sam Rintoul and Jake Kashdan continually putting pressure on the home defence. This pressure created an excellent opportunity for Rintoul but with an open goal, the attempt went agonisingly wide. Kashdan was unlucky with a few attempts with the home keeper, and man of the match, James Richardson keeping the hosts in the game. Apart from a few isolated instances, Wasps had enjoyed the better of the first half.
At the start of the second half and with Bob Chambers and Chris Presland keeping the favoured 4-4-2 formation, and with Horley only playing one up front in an attempt to gain control of the midfield, the hard working quartet of Cobb, Gates, Stow and Gardner certainly needed to be at their best.
The only goal of the game arrived after 79 minutes when Alex Evans was brought down outside of the area, and the resultant free kick was bundled home by Matt Gates. Wasps comfortably saw the game out, and were delighted to gain this victory with a scoreline which probably flattered the hosts.
