In the final match of their league season, Wasps were denied a point when Division A runners -up, Whyteleafe grabbed two goals in the last 5 minutes.
In a keenly contested fixture, the juniors had a couple of early chances with leading scorer, Brett Caiger and Ryan Fenton going wide. It was Fenton who was creating havoc down the left flank, and on another day Wasps could have gone in at half-time with a deserved lead. Kieran Towner, and the determined Luke Collins were matching the strong Whyteleafe midfield, ably supported by David Gardner, and the improving Sam Aldred, and the central pairing of captain Matty Burroughs and Adam White looked comfortable.
At the start of the second half although the juniors were the stronger team but keeper Adam Wood was called upon to make 2 fine saves as the visitors looked dangerous, particularly from set pieces. Play was end to end , as both sides went for the winner. Caiger, Samuel Stewart and Georgie Holah were desperately unlucky , but with 4 minutes remaining, Wasps were stretched and Whyteleafe took the lead. The home side gave one last effort to grab an equaliser, and conceded a second as the referee blew for full time.

Analysing the season, manager Alan Evans and coaches Paul Wadham, and Dave Burroughs commented on an improved division A league placing and another successful County cup run. The squad will now enter 2 sides in the league 5 aside tournament and will be playing in Holland over the Bank Holiday. Next season will again be demanding, and the managers will be attempting to strengthen the squad by attracting players of the required quality.

:: Oakwood Under 13's 4, East Grinstead Town Under 13's 3 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
In a match tarnished by a number of controversional decisions, East Grinstead Town U13s squandered a 1 -3 lead, going down 4-3 at Oakwood FC. Within the first 5 minutes Oakwood were awarded a penalty when Brett Caiger was judged to have handled the ball after a shot from outside the area struck his shoulder. The penalty sailed over the bar and almost immediately Wasps opened the scoring when the lively Samuel Stewart beat the keeper from close range. Oakwood came back strongly and an excellent save from keeper Adam Wood kept the lead intact. The juniors were then punished for failing to clear a corner and a 1-1 half time scoreline was a fair reflection.
Wasps started the second half much the stronger and increased their lead when Sam Aldred fed Luke Collins, and then top scorer Caiger was rewarded for leading the line with skill and determination. With a depleted squad due to half-term holidays, Wasps tired and wasted another 3 clear cut chances following good work from Max Davie and Georgie Holah. Oakwood were looking the stronger, with the Wasps defence of Matty Burroughs, Kieran Towner, Alex Evans and man of the match, Max Stow under pressure. The hosts pulled one back, and then equalised with 5 minutes remaining. As full time beckoned, the referee awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, and from the resultant cross, the ball ended in up in the net with the referees assistant clearly flagging for a deliberate handball. However the goal was given and a match which the juniors had largely dominated ended in defeat.

:: East Grinstead Town Under 13's 3, Chipstead Under 13's :: back to top Go to the top of the page
In the Tandridge league A Division, East Grinstead Town Under 13s Wasps battled throughout and ran out deserved winners over 3rd placed Chipstead FC.

Showing exactly why they have lost only 2 games in 2006, Chipstead were quickly into their stride testing keeper Adam Wood with a few long range efforts. The visitors took the lead after 12 minutes when a cross was finished neatly by James King.

On an extremely heavy Kings Centre pitch, the juniors dug deep and equalised when a superb run and cross by Max Davie was controlled and clinically finished by leading scorer, Brett Caiger. The Wasps midfield was gaining control, with David Gardner and the tireless Luke Collins winning important tackles and Georgie Holah intelligently using the flanks.

Samuel Stewart and David Bridgland replaced Caiger and Alex Evans, and a second goal came when the persistency of Ryan Fenton was rewarded with a finish from a tight angle. Chipstead defence was now looking vulnerable, and a Davie cross was headed in by the visitors defence under pressure from Collins.

At the start of the second half, with the wind at their backs, Chipstead exerted constant pressure, but the back four led by captain Matty Burroughs, Reece Coaker, David Bridgland and Adam White, restored to the heart of the defence, were looking comfortable. However the pressure paid dividends when Robinson reduced the deficit, and worse was to come when Wasps lost Bridgland following a last ditch tackle.

More drama unfolded when keeper Wood was injured, Stewart took the keepers jersey, and Evans replaced Bridgland. Total determination in the tackle and an excellent defence kept the lead intact, and in the last 8 minutes, breaks from Fenton, Caiger and Davie could have resulted in Wasps grabbing a 4th.

However this was an excellent win and with 2 games left has ensured the Wasps juniors finish in a very respectable mid-table position.

The Under 13s were missing 3 key players for this fixture and with a lack-lustre display, went down to a 2 nil home defeat at the hands of lowly Selsdon. Only 3 weeks ago the juniors had travelled to Selsdon and came away with the points, but on this occasion, 2 second half goals from long range left the Wasps with no reward from their efforts.

:: Croydon Athletic Under 13s 6, East Grinstead Town Under 13s 2 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
The recent run of good results came to an abrupt end when East Grinstead Town Under 13s travelled to Croydon FC, and were defeated by six goals to two.

The home side took full advantage of the blustery conditions and were two up within the first five minutes. Two further goals were added before the juniors started to compete, but were then rewarded when David Gardner fired home from close range. Croydon grabbed another before half time although Wasps were denied a clear penalty when leading scorer Brett Caiger was bundled over in the area.

The second half started with Wasps having more possession and the defence, superbly lead by man of the match, Matty Burroughs, looking more comfortable. Caiger, Sam Aldred and Ryan Fenton all went close, but the pressure paid dividends when Wasps were awarded a penalty. George Holah made no mistake from the spot and Wasps were now looking a different team. Samuel Stewart replaced Caiger, but was denied by the home keeper. With Wasps now playing three at the back, and not giving up, the hosts scored a sixth, and now join Wasps in a respectable mid table position.

On Sunday, in the Tandridge League U13 A division, East Grinstead Town travelling to Addington, and came away with the points following a 4 - 2 victory. The Towns juniors dominated the early exchanges, and Max Davie benefiting from a positional change opened the scoring , beating the off-side trap and calmly finishing after a 25 metre run. Ryan Fenton, Brett Caiger and David Gardner all went close, and at half time Wasps were looking comfortable.

After 10 minutes of the second half, a surging run by the powerful Luke Collins, resulted in a shot from a wide angle, beating the home keeper, who, like most of the supporters was expecting a cross into the area. Addington then took advantage of an injury to keeper Adam Wood, and hesitancy in the visitors defence allowing Ezehel to reduce the deficit. Wasps were determined to keep the lead intact, and with 15 minutes remaining, leading scorer Caiger, who had led the line well was rewarded with 2 goals in a frantic 5 minute spell. For the first Georgie Holah combined with the impressive, Sam Aldred, and with his confidence sky-high, Caiger repeated the finish leaving the home keeper flat footed.Addington grabbed a consolation, but the defensive unit of Kieran Towner, Reece Coaker , Samuel Stewart, Matty Burroughs and Alex Evans, aided by David Bridgland and Max Stow , held firm.

GARDNER DOUBLE SEALS VICTORY

On Sunday, East Grinstead Town U13s travelled to Selsdon and came away with a thoroughly desrved 2 - 0 victory. After 2 recent draws, when points were lost rather than won, Wasps were determined not to concede an early goal. However, on a hard, uneven pitch, an early clearance up field bounced over the visitors defence, and keeper Adam Wood was relieved to see the shot from Josu Bwatsi go inches wide.Wasps needed to settle, and the central midfield trio of David Gardner, Luke Collins and Sam Aldred were winning the early battles. With Ryan Fenton and Georgie Holah threatening down both flanks a goal looked likely. After 17 minutes, Alex Evans won an important tackle, and delicately released Fenton, who first time cross was bundled home by Gardner.Wasps were rewarded with a second before half time, Holah pressurising the home defence into a hasty clearance, Collins combined with Brett Caiger, and again Gardner was on hand heading in at the second attempt.

The second half started with Wasps determined to keep the lead intact, and with the defence of Adam White, captain Matty Burroughs and the impressive Samuel Stewart looking comfortable, the home side were struggling to gain any control.Max davie, David Bridgland, and Max Stow replaced Gardner, Caiger and Aldred, and for the last 12 mintes, Wasps welcolmed back Reece Coaker after injury. In the closing stages, a few long range efforts were comfortably gathered by Wood, and the match finished with the juniors satisfied with a clean sheet.

Next Sunday, the U13s travel to Addington with renewed confidence and looking to go one better than the previous 2-2 draw.

East Grinstead Town Under 13s travelled to league leaders, Waterloo FC, and were one down within a minute of the start when Aziz Conteh, evaded three tackles and crossed for Sulaiman Bangura to easily tap in. Wasps quickly gained their composure with Max Davie taking on the home defence with good support from Samuel Stewart and Luke Collins. The game was being keenly contested but the Wasps defence led by captain Matty Burroughs looked comfortable. Unfortunately, with half time approaching, they failed to close down and a long range effort from Oshilata crept in at the far post. Worse was to come , when, on the stroke of half time, keeper Adam Wood was unlucky just failing to turn a shot around the post.

Playing against the wind, Town needed to dig deep, but enjoyed the better of the second half. Collins shocked the home defence after good work from Ryan Fenton, and David Bridgland, and both Alex Evans and George Holah were foiled by last ditch tackles. Wood made a few good saves, and defenders Adam White and Kieran Towner were strong in the tackle. Right on the final whistle, Waterloo scored a fourth and ensured their 100% record was kept intact.

:: Coulsdon Colts Under 13's 1, East Grinstead Town Under 13's 1 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
For the second successive week, East Grinstead Town Under 13s squandered a number of early opportunities, and were forced to share the points away to Coulsdon Colts. The Juniors started well with Max Davie and Ryan Fenton causing the home defence all sorts of problems. The midfield trio of David Gardner, Luke Collins and Sam Aldred were also getting forward and the constant pressure almost brought a goal when Gardner saw a volley gathered by keeper Chadwick, and a George Holah shot was cleared after rebounding off the crossbar. With 15 minutes of the first half remaining, Fenton made the most of a quick release from keeper Adam Wood, neatly flicked on by Davie, to calmly round the keeper, and give Wasps a deserved lead.

After the break, the visitors again looked dangerous, with Brett Caiger being denied a penalty after a superb run in deteriorating conditions. The Wasps defence looked comfortable, but a lack of concentation allowed the home side to equalise. Wasps continued to press, Samuel Stewart and Max Stow combining well but the home side were pleased to hang on for the draw.

East Grinstead Town Under 13s ended a poor run of form by drawing with Addington Palace, although the visitors were more satisfied with a share of the points than the Wasps. With 5 of the squad missing due to half-term commitments, it was essential to start well, and after a number of early attacks, Ryan Fenton found Georgie Holah in space, and a neat finish gave the home side a deserved lead. Holah missed a chance to add to the score, but half time arrived with Wasps in control.

Addington started the second half the stronger, and shocked the juniors by taking the lead with two efforts that the stretched defence failed to deal with. It was a measure of their determination that the equaliser came with 5 minutes remaining, through man of the match, Luke Collins. The visitors failed to clear a Max Davie inswinging corner, and Collins volleyed home in style. With just eleven players available, the point was well-earned, and there were encouraging performances from Max Stow, David Bridgland and Sam Aldred.

In the Tandridge first division, East Grinstead Town Under 13s suffered another defeat in 2006 losing by 3 goals to nil in a very physical encounter against Tulse Hill FC.

Wasps started brightly and could have gone ahead through both Ryan Fenton and Brett Caiger, but their efforts failed to trouble keeper, Ruffell. Control of the midfield was going to be a key feature, and although Luke Collins, David Gardner and Sam Aldred were giving 100%, gradually the strength of the visitors gave Tulse Hill the upper hand. However it was a poor defensive clearance that handed Tulse Hill the lead, and 2 late goals produced a scoreline which flattered the visitors.

:: East Grinstead Town Under 13s 0, Withdean Under 13s 2 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
The Under 13s failed to make the quarter finals of the County Cup by Withdean Youth, losing at home by 2 goals to nil. Wasps looked to start well, with forwards, Ryan Fenton and Brett Caiger going close. However the visitors took the lead from a corner, when a weak clearance was returned and deflected past keeper Adam Wood. On the stroke of half time, Wasps were denied a penalty when the referee was unsighted and missed a hand-ball.

The second half saw both sides evenly matched, but Wasps were unable to take advantage of several half chances. Fenton went close and Samuel Stewart did well to force 2 corners. Luck wasnt with the juniors and cruelly they gave away a penalty went Kieran Towner was judged to have fouled Williamson in the area. To confirm it wasnt their day Wood saved the penalty, but was unable to hold onto to the rebound .

East Grinstead Town Under 13s were defeated in the quarter finals of the Tandridge Cup, losing 1 - 3 to unbeaten league leaders, and cup holders, Waterloo FC. At the start, Wasps were looking to keep things tight, and ensure the visitors were unable to play their free flowing football. Driven on by the centre midfield pairing of Sam Aldred and Luke Collins, the home team were restricting Waterloo to long range efforts which were easily cut out by the excellent centre backs of Kieran Towner and captain , Matty Burroughs or saved with ease by keeper Adam Wood. A goal-less first half ended with Ryan Fenton going close, and the juniors justifiably proud of their performance.

After 15 minutes of the second half , Waterloo took the lead when play was switched to the right and a cross from Conteh, was driven home by Bangura. The lead was extended when midfielder, Oshilata found the bottom corner with a low drive from outside the area. Wasps were far from finished, and dug deep with Brett Caiger finding Georgie Holah who beat keeper, Devine, from a difficult angle. With Wasps tiring, the visitors made the tie safe, but with 5 minutes remaining, the was almost late drama, with Fenton finding Caiger who saw a fine effort rebound to safety off the crossbar.

Wasps now look forward to the last 16 of the County Cup, and a home tie next Sunday against Withdean Youth.

STEWART SECURES CUP VICTORY.

East Grinstead Town U13 moved into the last 16 of the Sussex county cup with a hard fought victory over Sussex Sunday league leaders, Polegate Grasshoppers of Eastbourne.

The Towns juniors started well and in the opening minutes, Ryan Fenton blazed wide with only goalkeeper Baker to beat. The vistors were controlling the midfield but the Wasps defence with Matty Burroughs and Kieran Towner are in outstanding form and ensured any goal bound efforts were of long range. As half time drew nearer the home side took the initiative and Brett Caiger and Georgie Holah were unlucky with individual efforts.

From the start of the second half it was all one way traffic with Wasps camped in the opposition's half for long periods. Max Davie, Luke Collins and David Gardner were continually opening up the defence and from one attack, Caiger was fouled in the area, but the alert Samuel Stewart made no mistake from close range. Polegate quickly responded, attacking both flanks, but the home full backs of Alex Evans and Adam White held firrm and a one nil victory was achieved with yet another clean sheet for keeper Adam Wood.

After the match , the squad and parents celebrated at their sponsor's restaurant, the Bengal Village, with a pre Xmas meal and mini presentation. Three awards were made, Players player : David Gardner , Parents player, newcomer Adam Wood and the Managers award from Alan Evans and coach, Paul Wadham went to Max Davie.

East Grinstead Town Under 13s warmed up for next weeks Sussex County Cup tie with a resounding 5 -2 victory against Tandridge U14s B division team Coulsdon Colts.

Wasps were first into their stride and took the lead after 10 minutes when the visitors were unable to clear an accurate in-swinging corner from Max Davie. A second followed when a clearance from Alex Evans was helped on by David Gardner for the in-form Ryan Fenton to finish powerfully.
Four half-time substitutions slightly disrupted the flowing football, but not for long as Fenton grabbed his second latching on to a superb through ball from Georgie Holah.
Coulsdon were far from finished and came back into the match when the home side were harshly judged to have conceded a penalty. However, Wasps extended their lead thanks to a cool finish by Samuel Stewart. Good keeping denied goalbound efforts from Luke Collins and Sam Aldred, but with five minutes remaining, Stewart was rewarded with his second, and Wasps fifth. The visitors scored a consolidation goal, but the Towns juniors go into the County cup clash with Polegate in good form.

FENTON LEADS THE WAY

On Sunday, East Grinstead Town Under 13s cruised into the quarter final of the Tandridge league cup, with a comprehensive away victory at Stanhope . The early exchanges were fairly even but the Towns juniors soon started to exert pressure, and the first goal arrived when an accurate cross from Brett Caiger was headed in for an own goal.

Wasps were looking particularly strong down the right, with Reece Coaker maintaining his impressive form from the last three weeks. Coaker and George Holah combined well to release Ryan Fenton who finished from the edge of the area. A third goal was inevitable, and came when Fenton, seized on a poor goal kick and remarkably volleyed in from 25 yards. As half time approached, Adam White and Alex Evans combined to find Max Davie , who with a piece of individual brilliance gave the visitors a deserved 4 -0 lead.

The second half was mainly one way traffic, with Sam Aldred, Luke Collins, and David Gardner maintaining a grip on the midfield , and Kieran Towner ,Max Stow and keeper Adam Wood ensuring there was a third consecutive clean sheet. Samuel Stewart and Caiger grabbed one a piece, and captain Matty Burroughs was denied in the closing stages, but a 6 nil victory sets up a quarter final tie with Waterloo.

In the Tandridge A Division, East Grinstead Town U13s stormed to a convincing 4 - 0 win against Old Coulsdon Colts. Following last week's Sussex County Cup victory, all members of the squad are playing with more confidence, and an early lead came when the visitors failed to clear an accurate Max Davie corner, with Luke Collins scoring from close range. The next came when the impressive Reece Coaker won 2 tackles and curled in a long range effort aimed at testing the overworked Coulsdon defence. With keeper Chadwick stranded, centre back Sellman unfortunately headed into his own goal. Leading scorer Brett Caiger then displayed a good first touch, and superb vision to thread an inch perfect through ball to Georgie Holah who made no mistake with a powerful finish.

The half time 3 - 0 lead was just reward for constantly being first to the ball, and for the second week the back five of keeper Adam Wood, Kieran Towner, Alex Evans ,Coaker , superbly marshalled by captain Matty Burroughs were determined to keep a clean sheet. As the second half progressed Sam Aldred, David Bridgland, Max Stow, Samuel Stewart and Adam White, replaced the tireless David Gardner, Evans, Davie, Holah and Caiger, but the visitors never looked likely to find a way back into the match. Wasps increased their lead when Ryan Fenton was fouled and Towner found the net from 30 yards.

Next Sunday, the Towns juniors travel to Stanhope looking to clinch a place in the quarter final of the League Cup.

TOWN'S JUNIORS OVERCOME CUP HOLDERS

East Grinstead Town Under 13s gained revenge for last seasons quarter final defeat overcoming visitors and cup holders Phoenix Youth of Worthing by four goals to nil.

Wasps had the better of the early exchanges, with Samuel Stewart going wide from long range and Luke Collins heading over from a Max Davie corner.

Collins and Davie , ably supported by Georgie Holah and David Gardner , were controlling the midfield, and when half time arrived, the hosts were disappointed not to have scored the all important first goal.

Playing against the wind in the second half suited the Wasps, and the lead came after 10 minutes when Gardner beat the off side trap , and finished from inside the area. Collins made no mistake with a strong headed goal, and the in-form Brett Caiger made this second round tie, safe. The cup holders however were far from finished, but Towns back five of Reece Coaker, Alex Evans, Kieran Towner, Matty Burroughs and keeper Adam Wood absorbed the late pressure with ease.

Davie , after a surging run, fired in a superb 4th goal, Max Stow, Sam Aldred, and Ryan Fenton, replaced Davie, Gardner and Stewart, and ensured the seasons best performance was rewarded with a 3rd round home tie against the winners of Polegate and Lindfield.

East Grinstead Town Under 13s paid for a number of missed chances, going down to Tulse Hill by two goals to nil. With the wind at their backs in the first half, Wasps juniors created opportunities, but failed to capitalise , and were shocked when the hosts broke away and grabbed an unlikely lead. Captain Matty Burroughs, Adam White and midfield dynamo , Luke Collins tried to inspire the team, but on a very narrow pitch, the Tulse Hill centre half pairing , were growing in confidence.

In the second half, Wasps squandered further opportunities to equalise, although Kieran Towner combined well with Ryan Fenton only for keeper Kyakye to save well. At the other end, Wasps Adam Wood made up for an earlier error, tipping a goal bound effort over the crossbar. The hosts made the points safe with 3 minutes remaining, with Wasps hopeful of more luck in next weeks Sussex Cup clash with Worthing FC.

:: East Grinstead Town Under 13s 2, Oakwood Under 13s 1 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
East Grinstead Town Under 13s bounced back from last weeks defeat overcoming local rivals Oakwood FC by two goals to nil. Wasps started well and the midfield quartet of David Gardner, Luke Collins, Ryan Fenton and Max Davie, continually opened up the visitors defence. Following a strong tackle by Gardner, the ball fell to the in form Brett Caiger, who gave Wasps a deserved lead from outside of the area. Oakwood occasionally threatened but the home defence of captain Matty Burroughs, Samuel Stewart, Max Stow, and Alex Evans looked comfortable.

The second half again saw Wasps dominating with stand -in keeper Kieran Towner rarely troubled. The combination of Caiger and Georgie Holah were creating a number of chances to increase the lead. From yet another attack, man of the match Fenton, was brought down by keeper Farr, and denied a goal scoring opportunity. However the same player was alert enough to quickly bury the resultant free kick before the keeper could recover his position. Bridgland replaced Fenton, and Wasps deservedly secured their third victory of the season.

:: East Grinstead Town Under 13s 1, Waterloo Under 13s 13 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
On Sunday, the Under 13s entertained double winners Waterloo FC, and the difference in standard was soon evident. Wasps were missing the defensive pairing of captain, Matty Burroughs and Adam White, as well as Sam Aldred (injury) and Alex Evans (tonsillitis) and to make matters worse, centre half Reece Coaker limped off after 10 minutes. The first half was then one way traffic with the visitors running in eight goals although Ryan Fenton pulled one back before half time. The second half was more evenly contested with man of the match, Kieran Towner leading by example. Although five further goals were scored, the juniors never gave up, and David Gardner, Samuel Stewart, David Bridgland, Max Davie and the hard working Brett Caiger all had reason to be satisfied with their performance.

Next week sees the visit of local rivals, Oakwood FC, and an opportunity to secure a top 3 position in the Tandridge first division.

On Sunday,in the Tandridge league first division, East Grinstead Town U13s stormed to a second successive away win, defeating Chipstead by three goals to one. Wasps suffered an early setback when the hosts took the lead through Jack Pates, son of former Chelsea star, Colin. An equaliser soon followed through man of the match, Max Davie when keeper Scola was unable to hold onto a 20 yard effort. Wasps were now completely in control, George Holah fed Brett Caiger, who grabbed the second after a powerful run took him past 2 defenders. With half time approaching, Wasps lost both centre halves through injury, firstly Kieran Towner, followed by the reliable Adam White. Captain Samuel Stewart, Reece Coaker, David Bridgland and Max Stow marshalled the defence and with Alex Evans and Luke Collins controlling the midfield, Wasps went into the break with the lead intact.

The second half saw the visitors having the better of the early exchanges although keeper Adam Wood was called into action with two brave saves. With 15 minutes remaining, and supersub Ryan Fenton causing havoc in the home defence, the ball dropped to David Gardner who, from 30 yards, rifled an unstoppable volley into the top corner, an effort worthy of "goal of the season"
