Town's girls were left to rue several missed chances as the visitors took full advantage to complete an emphatic albeit surprise victory.

Town started brightly and an early drive from Rosie Newman was beaten away by the keeper.

Whyke gradually came into the game and created three good chances before a fine piece of chasing by Hollamby nearly produced something for Town. A break from the visitors could have proved costly but the shot was dragged wide. A Hamilton throw released Webb for a jinking run and shot and soon after Rosie Newman was within a whisker of giving Town the lead. From the corner, the keeper produced a point blank save from Webb's shot.

Town's missed chances came back to haunt them as Whyke weaved through the Town defence to slot home the opening goal. Back came Town and a Hamilton run was thwarted by the keeper. Whyke increased their lead following another strong break that Mann was powerless to prevent and soon after they added a third.

Right on half time Hollamby missed a gilt edged chance to get Town back in the game.

After two early chances from Whyke at the start of the second half, Town so nearly got a foothold back in the game as Hollamby broke free of the United defence only to skew her shot agonisingly wide. After a long range effort from Webb, Whyke took control again and three further goals followed to seal the points.

Town were taught a footballing lesson as title chasing Borough claimed the points with some sumptuous play. Town had an early shot from Webb but in truth had no answer to the passing and movement of their opponents. Lloyd and the Town defence were busy and did well to hold out until the sixteenth minute. After missing several chances a soft nod down from a corner crept into the corner of the net to give Borough the lead. A quick break made it two and Town were struggling. A fine move down the right ended in a headed third goal from a pinpoint cross and a precise pass into the net quickly made it four. Borough were rampant now but Lloyd managed to keep the score down.

Borough took over from the restart and were virtually camped in the Town half for the rest of the match. After a succession of corners, a fifth goal finally came from a low left footed shot. The pressure mounted but somehow Town managed to survive due to a combination of Lloyd's saves, desperate defending and the woodwork. However, once Borough had finally claimed a sixth Town's heads dropped and further goals followed to complete the rout.

Town were left to rue missed chances in the first half as Tigers staged a comeback to claim a share of the spoils in a fiercely competitive encounter.

Tigers started brightly but Mann was up to the challenge with some quality defending for Town. Town got a foothold in the game and should have been in front. Mann broke up the play and fed debutant Francis who set Hollamby free. With the goal at her mercy she dragged her shot agonisingly wide.

Rosie Newman then set up Wales but the keeper was out quickly to collect.

Town were now well on top and a run from Hollamby and a Webb shot followed.

At the other end indecision in the Town defence nearly cost them but Tigers blazed their shot wide with the goal at their mercy. Finally, Town got the goal their play deserved as Hollamby fed Rosie Newman who crashed the ball past the keeper for 1-0.

In a lively opening to the second period, Tigers started the better and a free kick went inches wide. Further shots followed from the visitors but Town responded as Webb and Wales linked up well. A Francis shot then went wide before Town were fortunate to escape following a Tigers corner. An equaliser was on the cards and it duly came as a Tigers break ended with a fine finish into the bottom corner despite the advances of Mann. Town found it hard to respond, the only effort coming from the tireless Hollamby. In the end, a share of the points was a fair reflection of the mornings play.

:: Seahaven Harriers Girls U13's 3, East Grinstead Town Girls U13's 0 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
In the second match of this double header Town were quickly behind as Harriers scored with their first attack. Town rallied to no avail and Harriers scored a second before the break.

An early run from Hollamby started the second half more positively for Town but the Harriers soon seized the initiative back. Harriers tails were up and neat build up play forced a corner. Soon after, tough defending from Mann prevented a run on goal. Harriers then had a succession of corners but Town held firm. At the other end chances fell to Hollamby and Hamilton but they couldn't find a way through. With time running out Harriers broke free to score a third and seal all three points.

Town were left to rue their luck as a late late winner denied them a deserved share of the spoils in the first match of a double header. Town were on the front foot from the off and Lauren Taylor-Blake had an early shot. Soon after, Wales drove through the Harriers defence. The ball broke to Hollamby but her shot went wide. Webb then went on a weaving run but Town couldn't find an end product. Harriers had a rare shot towards the end of the half but in truth Town dominated the play.

Harriers came out fighting in the second half and Town found it difficult to cope with the pace of the visitors front line. With the game heading for a draw Harriers broke through the Town defence and drove a low shot past Lloyd to snatch the points.

:: East Grinstead Town Girls U13's 0, Newhaven Girls U13's 4 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
In the second match of this double header Newhaven started the better with some early pressure. Town dug in though and a fine run from Lauren Taylor-Blake ended with a corner. Town's resistance was finally broken as a speculative shot flew past Wales for 1-0. Town responded and a good run from Hamilton produced another Town corner. More Newhaven pressure ended with a shot over the bar. Finally, the second goal came as Newhaven got to the bye line and crossed for an easy tap in. It could have been worse but captain Mann cleared off the line.

The second half started with Town looking weary and further goals followed to complete a miserable day for Town.

After an enforced break of ten weeks Town's girls finally returned to action in a double header. With just nine players Town were always going to be up against it and after a goalmouth scramble from an early corner the home side took the lead. Newhaven continued to push forward and poor finishing prevented further goals. Town finally got on the offensive as a Webb run stretched the home defence. Back came the home team and Wales made a fine save from a corner. However, she was powerless to prevent the second goal from the resultant corner.

An early break at the start of the second half ended with a third goal and there was no way back for Town. Runs from Webb and Hollamby were the only bright spots for Town as their lack of numbers told.

:: Withdean Youth 2000 Girls U13's 0, East Grinstead Town Girls U13's 2 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
After a frost delayed start to this league encounter, Town took control with a flurry of attacks. Wales sent Killick-Bird clear but her shot was beaten out by the keeper. The rebound fell to Rosie Newman but her shot flashed across goal. Hollamby produced a fine run before a Webb drive tested the home defence again. A delightful Killick-Bird pass just eluded Wales as Town kept knocking at the door. Poppy Newman then fed her sister Rosie but she dragged her shot agonisingly wide. With a rare attack, Withdean thought they had scored but the linesman's flag saved Town. More pressure followed from the home team before a flowing move should have finished with a goal for Hollamby. Town's defence then had to scramble the ball to safety from a corner. Fine link up play again by Killick-Bird and Rosie Newman released Hollamby but Withdean survived. The half ended with a snapshot from Rosie Newman before a Withdean shot hit the side netting.

Withdean got on top at the start of the second period and Town's defence had a few scares. Keeper Lloyd was kept busy but she proved up to the test.

Finally, a Wales shot relieved the pressure. Soon after, Town took the lead as a Webb run and cross was turned past the keeper by a home defender. Town then switched off at the back but got lucky as Withdean shot wide. Lloyd then saved point blank to keep it at 1-0 before Rosie Newman nearly sealed it but her shot went inches wide. With time running out, the home team were given a lifeline as a penalty was awarded for a Mann challenge in the box.

Keeper Lloyd stood tall and to Town's elation saved the spot kick. The icing was then put on the cake as Rosie Newman cut inside the defender before stroking the ball home to the delight of the away supporters.

:: East Grinstead Town Girls U13's 0 v. Polegate Grasshoppers Girls U13's 4 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
In the battle of the insects, Town's wasps were stung by the grasshoppers in dreadful conditions. The visitors had the best of the early exchanges and but for desperate defending in the goalmouth could have had an early lead.

Mann and Hamilton then combined well to break up another attack. Polegate thought they had scored after a neat move but the linesmans flag saved Town.

Finally, a Killick-Bird run got Town on the offensive and a shot from Wales followed. Lloyd then saved bravely but was powerless to prevent the next attack as Polegate finally found a breakthrough. More attacks followed but Town had some moments themselves the best being a run and cross from Webb which the keeper fumbled. Town's achilles heel then came back to haunt them as they gifted Polegate a second from a goal kick. Shots from Killick-Bird and Rosie Newman ended a disappointing half for Town.

Town came out hoping to respond but from the off Polegate seized the initiative and a break ended with a shot drilled low into the bottom corner.

The goal knocked the stuffing out of Town and buoyed the visitors who had further chances, the best being hooked off the line by Mann. A run and shot by Megan Taylor-Blake and a fine run on goal by Killick- Bird were Town's only responses and towards the end a fourth goal followed.

:: Henfield Girls U13's 7 v. East Grinstead Town Girls U13's 0 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
With players missing from both sides, it was 10 v. 10 in what proved to be a very open game. Early home pressure started to build resulting in a succession of corners. Town gifted Henfield an early lead as a goalkick was swept into the net. A fine run from Hamilton nearly brought the equaliser but at the other end Town rode their luck as the ball pinged around the goalmouth before being scrambled to safety. Webb then produced a silky run and shot as Town started to carve through a flimsy home defence. Stand in keeper Wales collected a Henfield shot before Town produced the move of the half. Hollamby cleverly put Rosie Newman clear through who slid the ball past the keeper only to see her shot hit the post. Hollamby then fed Hamilton but the keeper collected. Town then gifted Henfield an undeserved second in a repeat of the first goal. Town responded but it was nearly three as a half volley went inches over the bar. Hollamby then released Rosie Newman but she couldn't find a finish. The half ended with a driving run from Hollamby that deserved a goal.

After a stiff team talk from coach Blake, Town came out ready to get back into the game. Within minutes however, the plan was shattered as sloppy defending ended in a third goal. Hollamby, having her best day in a Town jersey nearly responded but two further goals quickly followed as Town lost their shape. An Owen snapshot went inches wide before a cruel bounce made it six for Henfield who couldn't believe their luck. A seventh followed and right at the death Rosie Newman nearly claimed a consolation but her shot went wide. It summed up Town's day.

:: East Grinstead Town Girls U13's 0, Bognor Regis Girls U13's 12 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
After an even start to this encounter against high flying Bognor, the pressure started to build up against Town and a fine clearance from Poppy Newman and crucial interceptions from Mann and Hamilton kept the score level. Finally, the deadlock was broken as a loose ball sneaked into the Town net. A second goal followed and it could have been more but for a fine save from Lloyd. Hollamby had Town's first meaningful attack quickly followed by a shot from the tenacious Hamilton. The away side kept passing the ball and were rewarded with two further goals before the break.

Town came out positively in the second half with a fine run from Killick-Bird before Lloyd kept out a swerving shot from Bognor. Further Lloyd saves followed but she was powerless to prevent the fifth after a swift break out of defence by the visitors. A fine left footed drive made it six and soon after Town conceded again. Town rallied with efforts from Rosie Newman and Owen but five quick goals followed as Town's heads went down.

:: Whyke United Girls U13's 2, East Grinstead Town Girls U13's 2 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
After last Sunday's home reverse to Oakwood, Town looked like they were getting back to winning ways against lowly United. But the nine girl United side produced a spirited second half display to claim a share of the spoils.

An early KIllick-Bird shot set the tone but United produced chances of their own as Lloyd twice denied them. Webb missed a glorious chance for Town before Lauren Taylor-Blake nearly broke the deadlock. Finally, a Killick-Bird pass found Rosie Newman who made no mistake. Further Town chances fell to Owen and Webb before the home side went close with two efforts. An Owen drive tested the Whyke keeper and soon after a Hamilton shot went wide. The home side then broke clear but the shot was blazed over.

Soon after, they were level as Lloyd fumbled a shot to gift an equaliser.

Town's response was good as Mann fed Rosie Newman whose shot was clawed to safety by the keeper. Further chances came and went for Wales and Webb before Killick-Bird picked the ball up and fizzed a shot into the bottom corner to restore Town's lead.

It was all United at the start of the second half and only a last ditch tackle by captain Mann kept Town's lead intact. The pressure led to several corners and Lloyd was kept busy. However, a free kick for United proved too hot to handle for the Town keeper as United drew level. With time running out Town finally woke up and a rare attack finished with a shot from Poppy Newman. Hamilton nearly got the winner but the ball was scrambled to safety.

Town got a succession of corners and Rosie Newman hooked one of them goalwards only to see the keeper collect. Killick-Bird had another chance for Town but right at the death a quick break from United ended with a match saving tip over from keeper Lloyd.

Town finally got the winning feeling as they overcame a stubborn Tigers side on Sunday. Despite the long grass making passing football difficult, Town had the better of the early exchanges. Killick-Bird had Town's first real effort but the ball drifted wide. With nearly fifteen minutes on the clock Town finally scored their first of the season. Rosie Newman won the corner and then looped Wales's corner over the keeper. The goal sparked Tigers as two shots went close to levelling the score. Town then put together a fine move as Megan Taylor-Blake, Wales and Killick-Bird linked up but the ball was cleared to safety. Lloyd then thwarted a Tigers break before Webb stretched the Tigers defence with a weaving run. Town had to be on their mettle defensively and captain Mann conceded a corner after a good move from Tigers. As the half came to a close, Town finished strongly as first Killick-Bird and then the energetic Hamilton produced good attacking moments.

The second half started with a succession of corners for both sides and Hollamby went close for Town but she couldn't find the finish. Keeper Lloyd then produced an unconventional save to keep out a long Tigers shot before Town produced a flowing move which Webb nearly finished. Rosie Newman was then put through but the keeper collected. The home side then took the initiative and went close twice. At the other end, Rosie Newman put Hollamby in but the ball was cleared for a corner. Tigers came back and desperate defending from Mann and Lloyd preserved Town's lead. A Town corner nearly produced a second as first Owen and then Webb had shots blocked. Finally, Town got the cushion of a second as Rosie Newman fed Webb who strocked the ball home. Killick-Bird then struck a post before Rosie Newman went close as Town finished strongly.

After two heavy defeats, the omens were not good for Town's girls as they made the daunting trip to face another of the high fliers with only ten players available. However, despite atrocious conditions Town produced their best performance so far this season and they can take lots of positives from this game. The match started badly as the home side took the lead with their first attack. A corner was swept in to the top of the net giving stand in keeper Wales no chance. The keeper was quickly called on again as she saved a good attempt from distance. Town were keeping to their game plan as they denied Eastbourne space whilst being resolute in defence. In a rare attack Killick-Bird nearly released Rosie Newman from a free kick. As the half wore on the home sides attacks became more frequent but fine defensive work from Hamilton and a bit of luck in the penalty area kept Town in the game. Rosie Newman then fed Hollamby but she couldn't find a finish. Popie Newman then tried her luck with a long range effort before Wales again came to Town's rescue with a fine save on to the bar.

An early cross and shot tested the Town defence at the start of the second half but after a good block from Owen, Eastbourne increased their lead soon after. After more home pressure and further saves from Wales Town started to get back into the game. A Rosie Newman cross just eluded Lauren Taylor-Blake and soon after the keeper got lucky after fine play from Killick-Bird. More Town pressure ensued and a fine turn from Rosie Newman set up up Killick-Bird but the ball was cleared for a corner. As the conditions deteriorated further, Eastbourne had further shots before a mix up in the Town defence made it 3-0. Town gifted a fourth late on but the display bodes well for the coming weeks.

Town were given a lesson by a formidable Wanderers side who will surely feature at the top of the league this season. They were quickly one down as a shot deceived keeper Lloyd. Lloyd was to have a busy morning as Wanderers attacked at will and only a flowing move between Mann, Rosie Newman and Killick-Bird provided some temporary respite. Town scrambled the ball off the line but soon after the home side got the second goal their play deserved. Town responded well with a good run by Killick-Bird. A passback then gave Town an indirect free kick which Wales drove goalwards. Luckily for Wanderers a defenders head took the ball over the bar. The miss proved decisive as an own goal made it three before a quick break ended with the ball screaming past Lloyd for a fourth.

With only pride to play for Town came out fighting and good link up play between Hollamby and Mann gave much needed encouragement. However, Wanderers soon took over again and three further goals followed. Much to her credit, girl of the match Owen kept tackling back as Town tried to keep their buoyant opponents at bay. They couldn't however prevent Wanderers from adding to their tally as they finished strongly.

:: East Grinstead Town Girls U13's 0, Crawley Wasps Girls U13's 8 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
Town's girls received a rude awakening to 11 a side football as their opponents adapted much better to the larger pitch ensuring they cruised to victory. Within minutes, Town were 2-0 down. A cross deceived keeper Lloyd and crept into the net. Crawley then drilled in number two from a free kick awarded for a passback to the keeper. Town responded and a fine run from Webb ended with Killick-Bird driving a shot wide. Town were soon on the defensive but captain Mann ensured a goalmouth scramble ended with the goal intact. Rosie Newman then struck a post folllowing a through ball from Killick- Bird. The miss proved costly as soon after a Crawley break ended with the ball looping over the keeper. Town pressed when they could and a fine turn and shot by Wales was collected by the keeper. Town then got lucky as a penalty was fired over the bar. The respite didn't last long however as Crawley scored two further goals using the advantage the slope gave them. To complete a miserable half for Town the visitors scored a sixth in stoppage time.

The second half started like the first as a neat finish produced a seventh goal. Town gradually started to get a foothold and two shots from Killick-Bird tested the Crawley defence. Further efforts from Webb and KIllick-Bird followed as Town looked more and more cohesive the longer play went on. Cruelly, an eighth followed in stoppage time but the second half display hinted that better days are round the corner for Town.
