EG traveled down to Cosmos in Brighton for the Sussex Junior Cup with a thirteen man squad and Assistant Manager Alex Over. Manager Ian Nichols was absent from the match. EG started well with a well deserved opener from Matt Garrett in the first 20 min, then against the run of play, Cosmos scored to level the match. After composing themselves EG never looked in doubt.
A constructive team talk at half time and an outstanding piece of play from the away team lead to Shaun Leggett making it 2-1. Unfortunately this angered the Home team and they scored again to level the match. EG were still in control and after plenty of attacks that started from the back, EG went ahead again through Adrian Bell who muscled his way through and made it 3-2. After another goal from Bell and from Leggett, EG finished very strongly but thanks to goal keeper Roger Smith and the back four defending 3 or 4 goal mouth scrambles, EG didn't concede another goal and ended up winning comfortably 5-2.
This was one of the strongest performance this season and hopefully the boys will carry on their form in the League at home on Saturday against Fletching 2pm.

On Saturday E.G fielded another strong side as they attempted their first win of the season at Crowborough in the Stubins Cup. After a nervy start the home team opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a goal that really knocked E.G back. After this set back E.G settled down and composed themselves. There were positive signs of E.G getting back into the game when another blow struck as Crowborough scored again completely against the run of play. This really made E.G think and following words of advice from the Manager Ian Nichols they re-grouped and started putting together some good passes and looking like the team they threatened to be. After various attacks Paul McKenzie put E.G on the score sheet with a well-deserved goal which was a great relief for the team and managers. After that E.G always looked in control and levelled with a stunning goal from Scott Johnson which boosted the team's confidence.

After half time E.G came out of the traps quicker and looked the more like the home team than Crowborough. After a foul was committed in the E.G 18 yard box Alex Over took a quick free kick and picked out Adrian Bell over the heads of a sleeping back four, who ran on and beat the defenders for pace and took it round the keeper to make it 3.2. A freak equaliser from the home team took it to the last few moments before extra time and if needed penalties. On one of the last attacks of the game E.G were awarded a penalty, which was then converted by Kevin Wright. This stopped the game going to extra time and was a well deserved win for E.G.

:: East Grinstead Town III 1, AFC Ringmer 3 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
With E.G's strongest team so far this season out there was a real confidence among the players for the first win of the season.

The first half was very tight with lots of chances coming from the away team, thankfully for E.G they had Roger Smith in goal who kept his side in the game with save after save until minutes before half time a cross which was only half cleared fell to one of the Ringmer strikers on the 18 yard box and struck the ball into the top right corner leaving Smith with no chance and his team mates deflated just as the whistle went for half time.

The players received an inspiring talk at half time by manager Ian Nicholls and headed back out for the second half full of confidence. Unfortunately against the run of play Ringmer took advantage of some confusion between some of the E.G defenders whilst one of their colleagues was down injured in their six yard box and scored their second. This outraged the home team and they upped their performance. After some positive attacks substitute Adrian Bell broke through and put E.G on the score sheet. Once again this lifted the home team and after more pressure Marc Tramontin got himself through on goal and was brought down in the six yard box by a beaten defender, unfortunately the Referee didn't recognise this as a penalty and only gave a goal kick. After various injuries suffered by E.G and tactical restructuring E.G went down to 10 men due to Ben Alexander being unable to continue. From this Ringmer took advantage of the extra man and scored again in the closing minutes to finish the game at 3-1.

It was unfortunate the Referee didn't give the penalty decision, if E.G had scored it would have made it 2-2 and a very different game. When questioned after the game the referee said that his reason for only giving a goal kick was that his view had been onbstructed and he couldn't be sure it was a penalty.
