:: Ardingly II 0, East Grinstead Town III 4 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
Wasps travelled away to Ardingly in the second round of the Edgar German Challenge Cup with a mixture of youth and experience making up the team.

From the offset, Grinstead were all over Ardingly but it wasn’t until 15 minutes into the game that the breakthrough came through Andy Goodwin when he pulled the ball back from the line to hammer in the first goal of the game. Ten minutes later Stephen Major skipped the ball through the Ardingly defence to put the visitors two up and this was quickly followed by Phil Hayward who chased a bouncing ball into the box and beat the keeper for Town’s third. On the stroke of the half-time whistle Bobby Wallis drifted a high ball over the keeper’s head to make it four for Wasps.

The second half saw changes to the structure of the Town team with Jimmy Blades, who was nursing an injury from the first half playing up front resulting in Goodwin and Hayward having to be pushed back, Town struggled against the heavy pitch and increasing number of injuries, and it became difficult to keep up the same level of performance as they had in the first half. The Town defence held strong against increased pressure from Ardingly with Bobby Buckingham and Darren Hall putting in strong performances. Young Jonas Ambuhl, making his adult debut in the Town goal, gave a confident performance and kept a clean sheet.

A well deserved win which sees Town through to the quarter finals of the Cup.

Team: Ambuhl, Buckingham, Blades, Hall, Swingler, Light, Martin, Hayward, Major, A. Goodwin, Wallis. Sub (used) R.Goodwin

:: Clymping 4, East Grinstead Town III 1 :: back to top Go to the top of the page
East Grinstead Thirds made a long and ultimately unsuccessful trip to Clymping on Saturday to play in the third round of the SCFA Junior Cup.
Clymping started with an aggressive attitude and ruffled the Town team and quickly took the lead via an own goal from the otherwise excellent Jimmy Blades. As the first half wore on Wasps' young team began to come to terms with the opposition and it was no surprise when they levelled the score through James Upton.
The goal sparked Clymping into action and they again took the lead just before half time. The defining moment of the game came in the fourth minute of added time in the first half. Climping broke free on the Wasps goal only for the striker to be upended in the box. The award of a penalty would have been enough punishment; however the referee deemed the foul to be intentional and dismissed the keeper as well!! Some justice was served when Climping missed the resultant spot kick.
Down to ten men and forced to reshuffle at half time, Grinstead battled bravely to get back in the game, however the pitch was heavy and legs became tired, and ultimately Clymping increased their lead and the game was lost.
