GRINSTEAD'S Reserves won their first game in the Suburban League on Monday night, the 2-1 success against Epsom & Ewell lifting them level on points with second-bottom Godalming Town in the southern division.
Phil Major has fielded predominantly young teams so far with predictable results in what is a much higher standard than the County League's reserve section.
But with Wednesday's FA Youth Cup tie in mind, a more experienced line-up took the field at Banstead FC's Merland Rise ground.
Adam Dart and Grant Hearn both made their first starts, there was a debut in goal for recent signing Rajab Seruwagi while James Horner played after missing last Friday's first-team game because of flu and midfielder Andy Smith, who is dual registered with East Grinstead United, played his first game of the campaign in the centre of midfield.
The home side fielded essentially a first team at the request of their new manager but they were stunned by Wasps in the first minute when Tom Harris's low centre was converted at the far post by David Lehmann.
Then in the tenth minute Marc Tramontin pressurised their fullback into playing a back pass too short and Harris nipped in, rounded the goalkeeper and made it 2-0.
Tramontin saw his shot drift wide of the far post after Horner's cross-field ball put him free but the hosts were back in it after 25 minutes when a cross-shot bounced off Rajab's chest in goal, hit the post and bounced over the line.
Grinstead were the better side for the first 20 minutes of the second half and Elvis Lynn was denied a goal when the home keeper made a brave block to keep out his shot after Harris had again set up a chance.
In the closing stages Epsom piled on the pressure and Rajab made one fine save after Grant had given away possession inside the box. But Grinstead defended stoutly to hang on to a welcome three points.
Team: Rajab Seruwagi, Scott Johnston, Adam Dart, Brian Tilley, Grant Hearn, Andy Smith, Marc Tramontin, Elvis Lynn, David Lehmann, Tom Harris, Jimmy Horner.

IN ORDER to give the under-18s 90 minutes together before tomorrow's FA Youth Cup tie we fielded an entire youth team last Saturday at Godalming in our latest Suburban League match.
We lost 6-2 but acquitted ourselves well although some of the goals we conceded were poor from a defensive point of view.
Zac De Cambre and Marc Pelling got our goals, their first at this level.
