SEAFORD TOWN 5, EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN 0
BOSS Bob Smith ended up playing as Grinstead's County League season ended with a heavy defeat on Saturday........... [Full Match report]
Injuries had already decimated the squad and by half-time at Seaford all three subs were on the pitch after Kevin Wright and Scott Johnston (both hamstring) and Brian Tilley (knee) limped off.
Smith had only named himself as third sub in case of emergencies but came on to play at right back for the entire second half - not bad for a 44-year-old.
He said: "We were without several players already and the injuries just made it worse. We started the game really well and could have been in front but we didn't defend very well. The scoreline flattered them somewhat but it was still disappointing to finish so badly. But I did okay - although I felt it a bit on Sunday!"
Wasps ended their season seventh in County League division two - the most telling statistic of the campaign was that they only won one and drew one in 12 games against teams above them.
After a short break Smith will get down to work strengthening his squad in time for a promotion challenge next season.
"We know the areas where we have to improve and I'm confident we can make the additions to the squad we need, he said The work has already started so it won't be much of a summer break for me but we are all aware of how important it is that we challenge for promotion next season."
Thanks to everyone that came and visited us on our stall at today's May Fair. We got absolutely soaked this morning when setting up, but thankfully the weather cleared up and encouraged people into the town. For those of you that took part in our prize draw for two tickets to our Sportsman's Dinner featuring Frank Bruno, the winner will be announced shortly.

Wasps' season ends with their biggest league defeat of the season, 5 - 0 to Seaford Town. It seemed like déjà vu when Grinstead had the better of the first 20 minutes with three good scoring chances, failed to capitalise and went in 3 - 0 down at the break, the same as in the previous encounter at the Crouch in the RUR Cup. An already depleted squad saw Kevin Wright go off with a hamstring injury after 17 minutes, Brian Tilley limp off and sub Scott Johnson not reappear for the second half. This left Wasps open and they conceded another two goals late in the second half. Match report to follow.
The reserves played their last game in the Sussex County League and narrowly lost 1 - 0 to Eastbourne Town who clinched top spot in the Reserve Premier League. Wasps will be playing in the Suburban League next season.

East Grinstead Town 1 - 2 Sidlesham
BOSS Bob Smith admitted Wasps' recent schedule finally caught up with them on Tuesday as they ended their home campaign with a disappointing defeat to Sidlesham. It was Grinstead's fifth game in ten days........... [Full Match report]
This defeat means the highest Grinstead can finish the Division Two campaign is fifth while they could drop as low as seventh depending on Saturday's results when Wasps wind up their campaign at Seaford.
THE reserves play their last ever game in the County League Reserve Section on Saturday at home to Eastbourne Town, kick off 3.00pm.
There is nothing on the game for Wasps but the visitors will clinch the league title if they win.
Wasps Under 18's visited bottom club South Park in their penultimate Southern Youth League match of the season tonight and came away with a convincing 6 - 1 victory. Their final match is a home fixture against Horley Town next Tuesday, kick off 7.30pm.

SMITH SETS HIS SIGHTS ON FOURTH PLACE
WASPS could sneak into fourth place in the final County League division two table after continuing their impressive run with a fifth win in six starts at Nyetimber Lane on Saturday.
We scored five goals away from home for the second time this year with Ben Burns’ hat-trick taking him to the top of the scoring charts with 20 goals - one more than Barry Leete.
Grinstead complete their home fixtures against Sidlesham on Tuesday and close the campaign at Seaford on Saturday (3pm). Victory in both games could be enough for a fourth-placed finish depending on the remaining results for Westfield and Wealden.
Bob said: “We are finishing the season on a real high which is important because it gives us something to build on next season. Burnsy will get the headlines because of his hat-trick but I would pick out guys like Brian Tilley and Chris Day who were outstanding on Saturday. Brian does so much unselfish work in midfield to enable the more creative players to shine and Chris has come into the defence for the last three games and done really well.”
Another plus for Wasps on Saturday was an impressive performance by youngster Jez Tobin. The 17-year-old striker scored his second goal in as many games after coming off the bench against Broadbridge Heath last Wednesday to score and help create the other for Burns in our 2-1 win.

Pagham 0 - 5 East Grinstead Town
Wasps made it five wins in an undefeated run of six matches this afternoon at Nyetimber Lane. Two first half defensive errors by the Pagham defence were clinically punished by Jimmy Horner and Ben Burns. Ben added to his tally four minutes into the second half as his far post corner eluded the Pagham keeper and crossed the line before being headed out. A similar effort later on was adjudged not to have crossed the line although the defender headed it up onto the underside of the crossbar and out. Ben got his hatrick when he beat the offside trap and raced on goalwards to cooly beat the advancing keeper.
Jez Tobin had his first full appearance and crowned a good solid display with a well taken goal which he struck from just outside the six yard box across the keeper into the far corner........... [Full Match report]
RESERVES WIN AT LAST
GRINSTEAD beat Arundel 1-0 in their penultimate Reserve Section premier division game of the season at East Court thanks to Matt Garrett’s late goal. It was their first win since January 7.
The reserves play their last ever game in the County League on Saturday at home to Eastbourne Town (3pm). Next season Wasps are playing in the Suburban League.

INJURY TO TADDY MARS THIRD SUCCESSIVE WIN
A THIRD successive league win for Wasps was marred by a terrible injury to striker Simon Tadman.
The 21-year-old broke his leg in two places after an accidental collision with Westfield goalkeeper Jamie Podmore seven minutes from the end of today’s Division Two game at East Court, which Wasps won 4-2......... [Full Match report]
Simon was racing onto a flick-on from substitute Adrian Bell when the pair collided just inside the penalty area, the loose ball rolling into an empty net for Grinstead’s fourth goal.
The striker, who was making his 61st first-team appearance for the club, was taken to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill where fractures to his tibia and fibia were confirmed. Tadders is the second Grinstead player in 15 months to suffer identical injuries after Kevin Wright also suffered a double leg-break against East Preston in February, 2005.
Manager Bob Smith said: “We played well but all that has been overshadowed by the injury to Taddy. It’s no coincidence that our good form has come when he’s been playing so well for us. We wish him a speedy recovery and the club will do all it can to make that process as easy as possible for him.”
HECTIC EASTER CONTINUES
WASPS’ hectic end to the season continues on Easter Monday with the local derby against Crawley Down, kick off 11am.
Michael Turville starts a three-match suspension so there will be one enforced change and there is a doubt over the availability of Phil Thompson. The terrible injury to Simon Tadman also means a change up front with Adrian Bell likely to get the nod.
Don't forget there is a double header on Monday with the reserves, without a win since January 7, at home to Worthing United, kick off 3.00pm.
AND THERE'S MORE....
Don't forget that Wednesday we entertain Broadbridge Heath in the league, kick off 7.30pm.
A four-page insert will be issued for this game to accompany the programme produced last Tuesday, when the match was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.
Next Saturday Grinstead visit Pagham (3pm) before hosting Sidlesham in the final home game of the season the following Tuesday (7.30pm).
TALE OF TWO PENALTIES FOR RESERVES
GRINSTEAD were beaten 1-0 by a last minute penalty in Saturday’s Reserve Premier game at Horsham YMCA having missed a spot-kick of their own through James Upton earlier in the game.
That was the club's final away game in the Reserve Section of the County League. Remember we are switching to the Suburban League next season.
The reserves are at home to Arundel on Saturday, kick off 3.00pm.
UNDER-18 SCHEDULE FINALISED
THE under-18s' outstanding home match against Horley Town has been re-arranged for Tuesday, May 2, kick off 7.30pm.

BROADBRIDGE HEATH GAME OFF
Tuesday night's match against Broadbridge Heath was called off by match referee Ray Upton at 6.40pm because of a waterlogged pitch.
The pitch was playable at 5pm but the heavier rain which followed left the central areas of the pitch saturated and Mr Upton had little option but to call the game off for the second time in three weeks!
No new date has been arranged. We apologise to any supporters who made the trip but we left it as late as possible in the hope that the rain would ease off but instead it got worse!

Eastbourne Borough Under 16's 5 - 0 East Grinstead Town Under 16's
Mark Leggett's Under 16's team put up a brave battle at Ringmer this afternoon in their Crowborough League cup final against Eastbourne Borough, but never really recovered from conceding a sloppy goal within the first three minutes. The first half finished with a penalty being awarded when keeper Scott Owens was adjudged to have brought down a Borough attacker. The spot kit was coolly converted and Borough went in at the break with a comfortable 4 - 0 lead. Town's character showed through and their second half display was much better. They were unfortunate to go further behind to a well taken goal by man of the match, Borough's equivalent to Peter Crouch.
The Grinstead lads left the field disappointed as they knew today's performance was below their norm but it has to be acknowledged that they did face a well organised and skilful Eastbourne Borough side.

CHAIRMAN SPELLS IT OUT
BOB SMITH will become the longest-serving manager in East Grinstead Town’s history when he takes charge for a ninth season in August.
But club chairman Richard Tramontin has told Smith that he expects Wasps to regain their County League first division status next season.
Grinstead are set for a disappointing mid-table finish in division two following relegation last year and the club are expecting better things in 2007.
Writing in Saturday’s match programme Tramontin said: “Bob knows the task ahead of him which he has discussed and agreed with the club’s management committee.
“He needs to improve the quality and quantity of players at the club and Bob is committed to making it happen with our full backing and support even though this will no doubt mean bringing in faces from outside the area.
“The committee and football management are completely united as a team but Bob needs to pull out all the stops and get a squad together in pre-season to ensure promotion at the end of next season – we can’t afford anything else.”
The need for Grinstead to regain top-flight County League status is greater than at any time because of new ground gradings being introduced by the FA at the start of the 2007-08 season.
Wasps have transformed East Court in recent years with new changing rooms and floodlights and various improvements to the pitch.
But more work is needed to make sure the club aren’t left behind. Among the projects planned for the next year are new dugouts, improved facilities and access for disabled supporters and a 112-seat stand for which planning permission has recently been submitted.
Tramontin added: “The club is investing in facilities to ensure we can compete in Division One.”
Smith took charge in 1998 when the club was at a low ebb and he has become their most successful manager. He led Grinstead to their first senior trophy for over 50 years when they won the RUR Cup in 2004, but relegation back to division two after just two seasons in the top flight last season was a bitter pill and Wasps have rarely looked like mounting a promotion challenge this year.
Smith said: “The club have made it clear what is required and how we are going to achieve it and the planning for next season has already started.
“We have some good players at the club already and some youngsters who are gaining valuable experience at this level. But we also need to add to the depth of the squad and bring in some more experience.
“I have a list of potential targets and I will be working extremely hard in the summer to try and get them to the club. I love managing East Grinstead and all I want is for us to be successful and a force in the county.”
East Grinstead Town 2 - 1 Lancing
Wasps demonstrated their new found belief and character coming from behind again to win 2 - 1. Just as on Tuesday against Westfield, Grinstead went a goal down early in the second half this afternoon against Sammy Donnelley's in-form Lancing. The equaliser came after a good penetrating run by Jimmy Horner who then threaded a pass through to Simon Tadman who finished well. The winner came from a corner kick taken by Ben Burns that was met by Phil Thompson who headed past the keeper. ....... [Full Match report]

EAST Grinstead Town face a hectic schedule of four home games in nine days after suffering a second successive postponement on Saturday.
The home match against Sidlesham at East Court was postponed – the second in a row called off because of a waterlogged pitch – and has been re-arranged for Tuesday, April 25, kick off 7.30pm.
At least the lack of activity will enable Bob Smith to pick from virtually a full-strength squad for the remaining County League fixtures as Grinstead try to finish a disappointing season on a high.
Drew Cooney played for the reserves in last Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat against Hailsham but his groin injury continues to cause him discomfort and Smith believe is might be better if he rests it for the remainder of the season.
But Matt Thorpe is due to return in tomorrow night’s game against Wealden after overcoming an ankle problem.
Luke Dunstan (thigh) misses out but he is expected to be back in contention on Saturday when Wasps entertain Lancing, kick off 3.00pm.
They then face Broadbridge Heath on the following Tuesday (7.30pm) but Adam Dart will be absent as he starts a two-match suspension.
It means he also misses the home game against Westfield on Easter Saturday but will be available on Easter Monday for the derby against Crawley Down at East Court.
However fellow defender Michael Turville misses that match as he also starts a ban for accumulating five bookings.
Grinstead’s players trained on Saturday after the postponement of the Sidlesham game and Smith is desperate for them to finish the season on a high.
“With the games we have left there’s no reason why we can’t finish in the top six,” he said. “They are coming thick and fast between now and the end of the season and we definitely don’t need any more postponements.”

After leading twice in their match against Hailsham Town this evening, Wasps reserves gave away a late goal and were beaten 3 - 2. Matt Garrett opened the scoring in the first half, converting a penalty. This was followed by another Grinstead goal which was dissallowed after the oppositin linesman flagged for a push. Hailsham levelled the score in the second half but Grinstead went ahead through a great header by Chris Day from a well placed free kick by Bobby Buckingham. Hailsham then equalised and finally clinched all three points.

THE INCONSISTENCY which has plagued Wasps all season struck again on Saturday when they handed relegation-threatened Saltdean their first win in nine games.
Grinstead should have been out of sight at half-time but only had James Horner’s first goal of the season to show for their dominance against a poor Saltdean team who had lost their previous eight games in County League division two.
But the wheels fell off in the second half when the visitors equalised from a penalty and two mis-judgements by defender Kevin Wright in the last four minutes handed Saltdean a precious win......... [Full Match report]
The other talking point was the performance of referee Colin Mallows who booked seven Saltdean players and could easily have shown a red in the first half after Ben Burns was pushed in the face in full view of Mr Mallows.
To the surprise of everyone, he showed a yellow card to both players - much to the disgust of Wasps’ boss Bob Smith.
He said: “I’m not going to say any more other than we were very disappointed with the officials on Saturday.
“As to the game, I felt we played some of our best football of the season in the first half but missed chances have again cost us. They roughed us up a bit in the second half but we should still have come away with at least a point – it was a very disappointing afternoon.”
Smith is now banned from the touchline for a month after he was suspended for using foul and abusive language towards the referee during last month’s 3-2 defeat at Westfield.
Reserve team boss Phil Major will run the team for this week’s home fixtures against St Francis Rangers (Tuesday, 7.30pm) and Broadbridge Heath on Saturday, kick off 3.00pm.
Smith is going to use his enforced absence to look at potential new signings for next season. He added: “The club have made it clear that promotion has to be the target for next year and the planning for that has to start now. I have to strengthen the squad.”
On the injury front, Barry Leete played and scored for the reserves on Saturday and may be in contention for a return against St Francis on Tuesday.

THREE AT HOME IN A WEEK
Wasps are at home again three times in the next week.
We are due to entertain Mile Oak on Tuesday (ko 7.30pm) with struggling Saltdean United the visitors next Saturday, kick off 3.00pm.
Adam Dart should return to the squad on Tuesday after missing nine games with a thigh injury and Matt Thorpe is available again but ankle injuries look like ruling out top scorer Barry Leete and defender Tom Green.
Barry said today that his injury could keep him out for the rest of the season but Tom expects to be training again in a fortnight.
Drew Cooney is on the comeback trail after a knee injury and he could be on the bench on Saturday.
DAVE GARRETT RETURNS TO ACTION
PERHAPS the best news today was the return to action of Dave Garrett.
Young Dave hasn't played since doing his knee ligaments in a first division game against East Preston back in November 2003 - nearly two-and-a-half years ago.
Dave has patiently got himself fit again and had 15 minutes at the end of the reserve-team game at Sidley, which Wasps lost 4-1 after James Upton had made it 1-1 at half-time with our goal.
Adam Dart and Drew Cooney also played and can expect some involvement on Tuesday for the firsts against Mile Oak.

MORE INJURY WORRIES FOR WASPS
WASPS’ boss Bob Smith must be wondering who he has upset this season after his side suffered more injury woes on Saturday.
A 3-0 home defeat to second-placed Selsey was compounded by injuries for young defenders Tom Green and Bobby Buckingham.......... [Full Match report]
Green, the club’s youth team captain, may have suffered ankle ligament damage after his ankle gave way when he made an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the visitors’ second goal.
Fullback Buckingham went off in the first half, also with an ankle injury, after he was clattered by Selsey’s Adam Davis.
Smith must have thought the injury problems which have blighted the second half of the season were over. Drew Cooney was the only player missing on Saturday but now he has two companions in the treatment table.
Smith said: “We more or less had everyone available again but now it looks like Tom and Bobby will both be out for a while.
“It’s a shame because they have done really well in the last few weeks at a time when it’s been hard because our results have been disappointing.
“I hate making excuses because every team gets injuries but we have really suffered badly from them this season.
“Having said that we played poorly on Saturday against a side who were there for the taking.”
TWO GAMES IN FOUR DAYS COMING UP
Smith will be hoping for a response in the two home games coming up in the space of four days. On Saturday Steyning are the visitors to East Court (kick off 3pm) and Mile Oak arrive next Tuesday (March 14, 7.30pm).
Adam Dart will return after nine weeks out having had two games for the reserves and Burns is back after suspension. But Green, Buckingham and Cooney remain doubtful and Matt Thorpe misses the Steyning game because he is unavailable.

INJURY LIST CLEARS UP
BOSS Bob Smith is hoping to have a near full-strength squad available when East Grinstead Town embark on a run of ten successive home games this Saturday.
Adam Dart, sidelined since January 3 because of a thigh strain, had an hour for the reserves on Saturday and is likely to come into contention while Drew Cooney and Kevin Wright, who missed the back-to-back County League division two wins over Seaford and Midhurst, are also expected to return to the squad.
Only Ben Burns, serving a one-match ban after accumulating five bookings, and defender James Ricketts are absent.
Burns will be missed after scoring seven goals in his last six games, according to his manager.
Smith said: “It’s a shame about Ben because he’s been our best player in recent weeks. But slowly we are getting players fit and available again and I really want us to push on in the last two months of the season.
“We’ve got a long run of home games now and our form at East Court has been pretty good. I’m hoping we can climb the table and finish the season as high as possible.”
Last Saturday’s division two game at Wealden was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch and Grinstead will be welcoming another of the promotion chasers on Saturday.
Selsey won 2-0 back in September in the reverse fixture and look a good bet to fill one of the three promotion places.
Smith added: “They like to play good football which should help us and this should be a good test for us.
“It was a shame Saturday was off because we’d won our last two, scored nine goals and the players were looking forward to testing themselves. They will get that opportunity now. I think Selsey and Oakwood will definitely get promoted but the third promotion place will be interesting.”
A BUSY weekend at East Court kicks off on Friday with an attractive-looking reserve team game against the premier division leaders Crowborough, kick off 7.30pm.

Midhurst 0, East Grinstead Town 5
WASPS moved back into the top half of the second division table after scoring five goals on the road for the third time this season.
Bob Smith was again forced to make changes for Saturday’s trip to a Midhurst side with a good record at home, but the manager’s selection did him proud.
The final scoreline may have flattered Wasps, who scored four goals in the last six minutes when their superior fitness told on a heavy pitch.
But apart from the first 15 minutes, when Midhurst made good use of the slope at their Rotherfield ground, Grinstead looked composed at the back and threatening in attack.......... [Full Match report]
It was Wasps’ first clean sheet for nine games while their goals for tally is only bettered by the top three in Division Two.
Smith hopes his side have turned the corner after a depressing run of six defeats in seven which has been followed by successive wins.
He said: “I’m determined that the season won’t just be allowed to drift now. In many ways we are looking towards next season but the players are keen to keep climbing the table and see where we end up.
“We were nice and solid on Saturday, the team spirit was good and if we’d taken our chances in the second half we could have scored more goals.”
Grinstead are now up to eighth although they face a stern test on Saturday away to promotion-chasing Wealden, kick off 3.00pm.
Slowly, Smith is getting some of his players back and available. Drew Cooney, Kevin Wright, Turville, Hearn and Foyle should all be in contention although it’s hard to see Grinstead changing a side which has just won 5-0 away from home. In addition, Adam Dart is due to return to training this week after two months out with a thigh strain.

4 goals in the last six minutes sealed a 5 - 0 away win for Wasps away at Midhurst and Easebourne this afternoon. The visitors were under pressure for the first ten minutes with Midhurst's Lewis Hamilton causing problems whenever he had the ball. Things then evened out and 0 - 0 at half time was a fair reflection. Matt Thorpe opened the Grinstead scoring after 10 minutes of the second half after being put through by Ben Burns. Ben thought he had scored himself some 20 minutes later but his effort was ruled offside, presumably against substitute Matt Mayo, who seemed to do no more than kick the ball after it had already crossed the line. Then came the final frantic six minutes which saw Burns put Mayo through for two goals, Phil Thompson score direct from a corner kick and Burns finish off the scoring, with Tadman and Burns also hitting the woodwork.
The win sees Wasps climb 2 places to 8th in the table.
Other scores in Division Two today:
Bexhill United 1 - 1 Mile Oak, Lancing 2 - 2 Sidlesham, Oakwood 3 - 1 St. Francis Rangers, Pagham 6 - 1 Steyning Town, Seaford Town 1 - 1 Crawley Down, Selsey 8 - 1 Saltdean United, Westfield 2 - 4 Storrington.
Although the East Court pitch was perfectly playable at mid-day, the continuous downpour thereafter resulted in referee Tim Robinson calling the match off for a waterlogged pitch.
The Third Team crashed out of the Junior Charity Cup this afternoon losing at home to Ifield Edwards 5 - 0.

 George Joslin Memorial Shirt
It’s a short story, which we hope, in bringing a local business already working with the club together with our under 9s team, has brought some happiness long-term in a sadness which affected some close members of our club.
The shirts for the under 8's as it was then, were purchased by 'grandad', as he was known to the boys, shortly before he died in the spring of last year.
Keeping his memory alive, we have our first ever memorial shirt, which has been kindly financed by Gordon and Terry of Wolfcat Computers.
Kay Benniman, Team Manager, said: "George Joslin, or grandad, as he was fondly referred to by the East Grinstead Town Under 9's team, died in the spring of 2005. He will always be remembered with a smile for his straight talking - as many a referee will agree - and unstinting support for our team. George would be at every match and training session the weather would allow him. A true gentleman who would always be the first to volunteer a helping hand.
With his generosity shown in supplying football shirts for his grandson, Paul Wrintmore’s team and his friends, it is only fitting that on a Saturday match day he should be thought of with his name proudly printed on the reverse of our team shirts."

WASPS STOP THE ROT WITH MORALE-BOOSTING WIN
WASPS stopped the rot after losing six of their previous seven games with an impressive second-half display in Saturday’s County League match at East Court......... [Full Match report]
Bob Smith’s men now have three goalscorers in double figures after Simon Tadman (2), Barry Leete and man of the match Ben Burns all netted after a goalless first half.
Victory in only their third league game at home since November lifted Wasps into tenth place and Smith felt it was no more than his team deserved.
He said: “We’ve had some poor results in recent weeks and although one win doesn’t change everything it will be a big confidence boost for the players.
“We were a bit nervous early on but once the first goal went in I thought we played well and scored some cracking goals.”
Smith was delighted to welcome back James Horner for his first game of the season on the right and with defender Luke Dunstan also returning and Adam Dart due to resume training this week after nearly two months out with a thigh strain, Grinstead’s injury problems are starting to ease.
In addition, Drew Cooney and Kevin Wright will be available for this Saturday’s league game away to Midhurst (3pm) although Smith is unlikely to make too many changes a winning team.
Wasps are also away on the 25th to Wealden before they embark on a run of eight successive home matches which Smith hopes will give them the opportunity to climb the table.

Two goals from Simon Tadman, a header from Barry Leete, and a cheeky individual goal from Ben Burns secured three points for Wasps this afternoon beating Seaford 4 - 1 in front of a crowd of only 59 people.

WASPS BEATEN IN FRIENDLY
A friendly against Lingfield at East Court on Tuesday night resulted in a 2-1 victory for the visitors who came from behind to triumph with two goals in the last 20 minutes.
Although a win would have been good for confidence the purpose of the exercise was to give players much-needed match practice and in that regard it was worthwhile. Over the 90 minutes, a draw would have been a fair result.
Matt Bradford played in the first half and was impressive at the back, winning a lot of headers and tackles and organising those around him. It was significant that when he went off at half-time Wasps were nowhere near as secure defensively.
It was good to see James Horner get 90 minutes under his belt. Jimmy is one of the players who has suffered because of the reserve team’s lack of activity in recent weeks as he tries to get fit after injury.
He provided some good service from the flanks and went close to getting a second goal for Grinstead just after the break with a curling effort which hit the bar.
The absentees were Barry Leete, Simon Tadman, Adrian Bell (all working) and Drew Cooney and Kevin Wright, neither of whom are available today.
James Hadfield played in the second half and did quite well, Luke Dunstan and Chris Day got 45 minutes as they return after injury, leaving only Adam Dart on the treatment table now. He should be back in light training next week.
The game itself was quite competitive and Grinstead went ahead midway through the first half when Bobby Buckingham made a great run down the right to get on the end of a pass and beat Lingfield’s goalkeeper from the corner of the box.
To be fair, it wasn’t difficult to see why Lingfield are running away with division three. Danny Gillard was a handful up front while Steve Moore, Mark Hillen, Chris Arrow and Phil Meakin all did well against their former club.
The sides look almost certain to meet again next season when Division Two league points will be at stake.

BOB SEES RED AS WASPS LOSE LEAD
Westfield 3, East Grinstead Town 2
WASPS’ boss Bob Smith faces a lengthy touchline ban after he was sent off for the second time this season as we suffered another disappointing defeat on Saturday.
Bob, who was suspended for two weeks earlier in the season after a run-in with match officials during a cup tie against Seaford, was sent from the dugout in the second half for foul and abusive language.
He said: “I over-reacted and got what I deserved. It was no way to behave and I will be contacting the referee this week to personally apologise. The frustration of seeing us go in front and then lose the lead got the better of me but that is no excuse.”
Wasps looked like ending their poor run when Ben Burns and Simon Tadman struck in the space of six minutes just before the break to give us a 2-1 half-time lead.
But our badly under-strength side was beaten by second-half goals from Duncan Jones......... [Full Match report]
Smith added: “We had to make changes again which seems to be the norm at the moment but I thought we did well, especially in the first half. We’re going through a bad run where every mistake we make is punished but I know we are capable of climbing the table again when we get some of our injured players back.”
BRADFORD SIGNS AND WILL PLAY IN FRIENDLY
Wasps have signed defender Matt Bradford, who played at the end of last season before suffering injury, and he is due to play in a friendly against Lingfield on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm).
Players like James Horner, John Richardson and Brian Tilley will also get 90 minutes under their belt and Bob says Luke Dunstan and Adam Dart could play a small part as they step up their comebacks after injury.
There is no Kevin Wright or Drew Cooney – both unavailable – for Saturday’s league game against Seaford Town at East Court (3pm), which will mean another defensive re-shuffle, but midfielders Phil Thompson and Matt Thorpe should be back in contention.
Wasps have now lost five of their last six in league and cup and Bob is determined to finish the season as high as possible and make a concerted push for promotion. Planning for next season will begin before this one ends.

SAINTS ALIVE - WASPS WELL BEATEN
St Francis Rangers 3, East Grinstead Town 1
EVEN with games in hand and most of their remaining matches at East Court, it’s hard to see Wasps maintaining a promotion challenge after a third league defeat in four on their first visit to St Francis on Saturday.
Manager Bob Smith was without half a side with seven first-teamers absent and his makeshift defence had no answer to Saints’ attacking power in the first half......... [Full Match report]
BETTER NEWS ON INJURY FRONT
Grinstead have slipped to 11th, their lowest position of the season in Division Two, but Smith is confident things will improve.
Chris Day, out for a month with an ankle injury, did the warm-up on Saturday and is close to a comeback while Green and Thorpe should be available for this Saturday’s league game at Westfield (ko 2.45pm).
Smith is keen to give James Horner and John Richardson their chance but they need games in the reserves first. Unfortunately they have only played three games in seven weeks after the postponement of Saturday’s match against Arundel because part of the East Court pitch was frozen. The Rose Bowl is back in town.....
Lee Quinn, EGTFC Commercial Manager, set out on a campaign to track down the Rose Bowl back in March 2005.
His efforts were finally rewarded last week, when he collected the trophy from Crystal Palace FC and brought it back to East Court after having been lost in the CPFC trophy cabinet for nearly 16 years.
Particular thanks for helping Lee to track down the trophy goes to Bob Marchant, now retired, but busy in retirement as the Queen Victoria Hospital museum curator. The history of the Rose Bowl was unveiled thanks to Bob. Bob had photographs of the Bowl and newspaper cuttings, and these helped Crystal Palace FC Chief Executive Phil Alexander track down the trophy.
Previous winners of the trophy, which was first won by East Grinstead in 1938/39, have included Chelsea in four consecutive seasons in the fifties, Brighton & Hove Albion, Lewes, Chichester City, Haywards Heath, Whitehawk and of course the last winners Crystal Palace in 1991.
Lee is now busy trying to find opponents for a pre-season charity match for the Richards Hospital Cup, known as the Rose Bowl.

In case you think your eyes are playing tricks, don't worry, you aren't seeing things - the club is most grateful that Mustafa is sponsoring two East Grinstead Town Teams.

ONE STEP FORWARD...TWO BACK
East Grinstead Town 1, Pagham 4
IT’S one step forward and two back at the moment for Wasps who crashed to their joint-heaviest home defeat of the County League Division Two campaign on Saturday......... [Full Match report]
Manager Bob Smith said: “For the first 20 minutes we carried on from the previous week and looked like we would get a second goal.
“But we defended poorly at set pieces to concede two bad goals and when their goalkeeper saved Ben’s free-kick I think the players sensed it was going to be one of those days.
“After such a good result the previous week it was a big setback. Losing Luke Dunstan is another blow but we just have to get on with it. I thought Kevin Wright and Ben Burns were our best players but one or two others need to look at their performances and ask themselves if they can do better.”
Wasps pay their first ever visit to the Colwell Ground on Saturday when they face St Francis Rangers, kick off 2.30pm.
The remaining Dvision Two fixtures for the saeson can now be seen on First Team Match Fixtures and include eight consecutive home fixtures.

Storrington 1, East Grinstead Town 5
WASPS bounced back in style after three successive defeats to re-ignite their promotion challenge on Saturday.
All five Grinstead goals came in an amazing first half as Bob Smith’s decision to revert back to a 4-3-3 formation yielded a handsome dividend as Wasps completed the double over their County League division two opponents.......... [Full Match report]
Wasps are still 12 points behind third-placed St Francis in the table, but with 13 of their remaining 18 league games at East Court, Smith still feels they have a chance of pushing for promotion.
Fixture changes
The first team are now at home to PAGHAM on Saturday, kick off 3.00pm.
Then on January 28 we go to ST FRANCIS RANGERS, also in the league. Kick off is 2.30pm.
The Reserves currently do not have a match next Saturday as their scheduled opponenets, Oakwood, are involved in a 3rd Round Cup tie.
Changes for this Saturday’s game against Pagham at home (3pm) are likely to be kept to a minimum but Luke Dunstan should be fit after missing two games through injury. Smith says Adam Dart is another fortnight from his return after injury while Chris Day remains a long-term absentee because of ankle ligament damage.

WASPS to hang proud in Rydon House......
Peter Roberston, Group Head of Marketing at Rydon Group, is seen being presented with a framed shirt by Richard Tramontin, EGTFC Chairman.
The presentation was made at a recent sponsors evening, organised by Lee Quinn, EGTFC Commercial Manager.
The Rydon Group was established over 25 years ago and now has three principal offices in Forest Row and East Grinstead. The company has grown and progressed to become an integrated construction, development and building services group operating throughout the south of England.
Richard Tramontin said: “There is certainly no club in Sussex at our level who have enjoyed such fantastic backing as we have had from Rydon over the years.
“They have been great supporters of the club since 1991 and we are grateful for their continued backing".
He added"Running football at this level is a costly business and without their help we would struggle to provide football in the community for the hundreds of adults and youngsters who come under the East Grinstead Town banner.
“Their support is really appreciated by everyone associated with East Grinstead Town.”
James McClaren-Rowe of Stationery Store, was also presented with a framed shirt.
Besides being kit sponsors of the current Under 13 Colts since 2004, The Stationery Store which is located in Ship Street in East Grinstead, are the Match Day Programme sponsors for East Grinstead Town for the 05/06 and 06/07 seasons.
The Stationery's Store support has helped transform the club's programme, which has been edited by Bruce Talbot for more years than he cares to remember, into probably the best in the County League.
The programme is available from the main line station and Surprises in London Road at £1.50, on subscription at £1.40 and at the ground on match days at £1.

WASPS TOPPLED BY MIGHTY OAK
Mile Oak 4, East Grinstead Town 0
WASPS’ interest in cup football is over for another season after their miserable start to 2006 continued on Saturday........... [Full Match report]
Successive 3-0 defeats means Grinstead have lost track with the league leaders and now they are out of the Division Two Cup after conceding four first-half goals to a side they beat 5-2 on the opening day of the league campaign.
Bob Smith’s men at least salvaged a measure of pride in a goalless second half, but the manager admits he needs to shake things up.
Wasps haven’t scored a goal for four games – their last two against Bexhill on December 17 were both own goals – and there were alarming lapses defensively which were ruthlessly punished by Oak.
Smith said: “We just didn’t look convincing and words were spoken at half-time. We showed a lot more passion and worked a lot harder but I know it’s not good enough. We have to improve and I will be taking steps to make sure that happens.
“It’s too easy for some players to get into the side at the moment and that can’t continue. It would help if we had everyone available but I can’t use that as an excuse because every manager at this level has the same problems.”
Other results dropped them down to tenth in Division Two but they have games in hand and could still mount a promotion challenge if they get their act together with 14 of their remaining 19 league matches at East Court.
Dart and Ricketts should return on Saturday when Wasps are on the road again at Storrington, kick off 2pm.

WASPS crash out of Div 2 Cup....
A shocking first half display against a poor Mile Oak side saw Wasps gift 4 goals and lose this afternoon's Quarter Final of the Division Two Challenge Cup at the Rec. It all started to go wrong when Drew Cooney gave away a 25th minute penalty for shirt pulling and the resultant spot kick by Paul Eaton gave Dave Tidy no chance. Grinstead then went on to gift three further first half goals from defensive errors (Jamie Ash 30, and Clive Jackson 44 & 45 minutes) with Mile Oak not having really created anything else themselves. Wasps equally did not create any chances in the first half and had their first shot on target after 65 minutes.
Meanwhile, results in Division Two today mean that Wasps drop to 10th place...... [Latest Division Two Table] Division Two results round up:
Bexhill United 0 - 5 Oakwood, Broadbridge Heath 2 - 4 Seaford Town, Crawley Down v Westfield Postponed, Lancing 2 - 2 Midhurst & Easebourne, Pagham 1 - 3 Wealden, Saltdean United 3 - 2 St. Francis Rangers, Selsey 2 - 0 Steyning Town, Storrington 3 - 1 Sidlesham.
The reserves consolidated their third spot in the league, beating Lancing 2 - 0. They are one point behind second place Arundel with a game in hand and seven points behind leaders Crowborough Athletic...... [Latest Reserve Premier Table]

Grinstead remain on the fringes of the promotion race but there were some positives for boss Bob Smith whose side were much more committed after their limp display against Crawley Down on Boxing Day when they lost by the same scoreline.
Wasps go to Mile Oak on Saturday for a quarter-final in the Division Two Cup (ko 3pm). Luke Dunstan should be available but Chris Day is almost certainly out while Adam Dart is also struggling with a thigh problem.

WESTFIELD GAME IN DOUBT
TOMORROW night's home game against Westfield in the league is in doubt because of the cold weather.

The club plan to leave any pitch inspection until mid-afternoon to give the pitch as long as possible to thaw out, but groundsman Peter Cadman describes the chances of the game going ahead as "no better than 20 per cent at the moment."
As soon as a decision is made, it will be on the website so keep checking tomorrow to save yourself a wasted journey.
Don't forget we entertain in-form Oakwood at East Court next Tuesday, kick off 7.30pm.
On Saturday the reserves go to Hassocks in the league (3pm) and the thirds are due to be at home to Maresfield Village II on Saturday, also in a league fixture (2pm).
LOCAL DERBY RETURN DATE
The County League confirmed today that the home game with Crawley Down will be on Easter Monday, April 18, kick off 11am.
Tomorrow's Third XI match against Maresfield Village II has been postponed because of a waterlogged and (in some parts) waterlogged pitch.

GRINSTEAD GOAL GLUT CONTINUES
East Grinstead Town 4, Midhurst 2
MANAGER Bob Smith was full of praise for his strikers after Grinstead’s goal blitz continued with a hard-fought County League win over Midhurst at East Court on Saturday.
Front men Barry Leete, Simon Tadman and Adrian Bell all scored as Wasps made it 16 goals in four games, the last three of which have been won.
Victory moved us up to sixth in the second division table and we are handily placed to mount a challenge to the top three, two of whom dropped points on Saturday.
Bob said: “It was a good three points against a side that will cause problems this season. The difference was the pace and movement of our front three. Their mobility is going to give teams problems.”............. [Full Match report]
TWO NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD
JAMES Horner is back at East Court after recovering from the broken ankle he sustained in the match against Pagham back in March.
The midfielder, who has made 102 appearances for the club in two separate spells, will return for the reserves against Worthing United this weekend.
Manager Bob Smith said: “James is going to be a useful addition to our squad. We all know the ability he possesses and once he gets match fit I’m sure he will be pressing for a first-team place.”
Grinstead have also signed Scott Harrison from Combined Counties League outfit Cobham.
Harrison, who can play in defence or midfield and lives in the town, debuted for the reserves last weekend.
Wasps go to Lancing in the league on Saturday (3pm) without Adam Dart, who began a five-week suspension on Monday. Drew Cooney is expected to be fit after missing the win over Midhurst through injury and Kevin Wright, out for the last three games because of a hamstring problem, is likely to make his comeback in the reserves at home to Worthing United.

Wasps make it three wins in a row......
Wasps were slow getting started this afternoon against a lively Midhurst & Easebourne team, but goals from Adrian Bell, Simon Tadman and Adam Dart put them three with the visitors pulling one back just on the stroke of half time.
The second half started with Midhurst being awarded a penalty which even surprised them as they were claiming a corner. Renshaw beat Dave Tidy and with the score at 3 - 2, home spectators were getting a little nervous. Barry Leete then scored his fifth goal in four games and secured a 4 - 2 win which puts Wasps in sixth place. Match report to follow
The reserves got through to the next round of the Sussex Intermediate Cup by beating Faygate United 1 - 0, while the Third XI went 2 - 0 up against Pease Pottage only to lose 4 - 2.

BOB: IMPORTANT WE BUILD UNBEATEN RUN
Victory on Saturday moved Wasps up to eigth in Division Two and although they still have some ground to make up on the top two, they have only played three of their ten league games at home.
The fourth will be this Saturday when improving Midhurst come to East Court, kick off 3.00pm.
Dunstan and Thorpe will be available and there is a chance that Dart (hip) and Wright (hamstring) will also be fit. Dart will then be suspended for five weeks following his red card against Seaford last month while Brockbank also faces a suspension after he was sent off in a recent reserve team fixture.
Smith added: “The squad is really stretched at the moment but the likes of Brockbank, Bell and Richard Foyle have come in and shown we have a bit more depth than people might think.
“We need to build on two good wins against Midhurst. They started the season poorly but have improved in recent weeks and will make it really difficult for us.”
